During her recent live statement, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the recent Russian missile attacks on several energy facilities in Croatia as a war crime.
The attacks, which occurred on December 29th, 2021, struck several critical energy installations, including a gas-fired power plant, a gas pipeline, and an oil storage facility. The damages caused by the missiles have disrupted energy supplies to some parts of Croatia, causing widespread concern about energy security in the region.
In her statement, President von der Leyen expressed her solidarity with the Croatian people and their government, stating that the European Union will continue to provide every support to protect Croatia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
She also called on Russia to stop these “senseless and brutal attacks,” which have resulted in civilian casualties and damages to critical infrastructure. She further highlighted that such attacks constitute clear violations of international humanitarian law and could have broader implications for regional stability and security.
This is not the first time that Russia has enlisted aggression against countries within the region. In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, followed by its intervention in Eastern Ukraine. The international community has repeatedly denounced such acts of aggression, with the EU imposing sanctions on Russia as a result.
The Russian government has denied any involvement in the recent missile attacks on Croatia, despite evidence to the contrary. Furthermore, the Russian Foreign Ministry has accused the Croatian authorities of fabricating evidence to implicate Russia.
However, international response has been swift, with the EU and several NATO member countries expressing their condemnation of the attacks and offering support to Croatia.
In conclusion, it is clear that these missile attacks on Croatia are unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. The European Union must continue to support Croatia and uphold its commitment to international law and humanitarian principles. Russia must be held accountable for these attacks, and the authorities must cooperate fully with the international community to prevent further damage to the security and stability of the region.
